EXPERIMENTS WITH INDIVIDUAL PHOTONS AND ATOMS CONFIRM
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS AND QUANTUM OPTICS

Abstract: The Nobel Prize in Physics 2012 was awarded jointly to Serge Haroche and David J. Wineland for their research in the field of quantum optics with formulation «for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems». The «groundbreaking experimental methods» development, which lasted for several decades, made it possible to observe such fundamental quantum phenomena as birth and death of a single photon, quantum entanglement, quantum jumps, quantum teleportation, to realize quantum gates with single ions and, finally, to start the practical realization of the quantum computer idea and the control of the processes in quantum systems.
Keywords: quantum systems, quantum computer, Nobel Prize, Haroche, Wineland.
