Developments of the Bakul Institute for Superhard Materials of NAS of Ukraine in the direction of the mechanical machining using cutting and abrasive tools, equipped with superhard materials – diamond and cubic boron nitride – are considered. Modern tendencies of mechanical machining processes are shown and the approaches to their realization using the tools from superhard monocrystalline powders and polycrystalline composites are indicated. It is shown that modern technologies are based on the results of investigations of the laws of mechanics, thermophysics, physico-chemistry, kinetics, thermodynamics in the zone of contact interaction of the tool with the machined product. Examples are given of developing a cutting tool that has the ability to self-diagnose on wear indicators and on the quality of the machined surface. Particular attention is paid to the issues of technological provision of the surface layer state and management of the operational properties of products. The main branches of application of the created tools and technologies of turning, grinding, dressing of abrasive circles both in the main production and in the processes of repair are covered. The directions of perspective development of mechanical machining processes in accordance with the concept "Industry-4.0" are presented. It is emphasized that the work carried out by the Institute on the domestic production of tools from superhard materials is the basis for the development of modern high-performance machining processes promising for the innovative development of the basic industries of Ukraine.
