MYKHAYLO HRUSHEVSKY AND THE ACADEMY: UNREALIZED PRESIDENCY (1924–1928)

Abstract:
The article covers the work of M. Hrushevsky in the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences after his return from emigration. After accepting a compromise with the Bolshevik government and expecting to head the UAS, the scientist was engaged in a complex struggle on two fronts: with the management of the Academy for starting large-scale scientific research and with the ruling authority of USSR against using him in blatantly ideological aims. It is shown that M. Hrushevsky has lost this competition with a totalitarian system which defined the tragic end of his life’s course.
