THE ROLE OF ACADEMICIAN S.P. TIMOSHENKO IN THE FOUNDING OF THE UKRAINIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND THE INSTITUTE OF TECHNICAL MECHANICS OF THE UAS
To the 140th anniversary of Academician S.P. Timoshenko
December 23, 2018 marks the 140th anniversary of an outstanding scientist-mechanic of world renown, a well-known organizer of science and well-known teacher, our fellow countryman Stepan Prokopovych Tymoshenko. Academician S.P. Tymoshenko entered the history of national science as one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the founder and first director of the Institute of Mechanics of NAS of Ukraine, to which his name has now been given. The article gives a brief overview of the life and creative path of S.P. Timoshenko. The main attention is paid to his activities as a member of the Commission for drafting a bill on the establishment of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, as well as an analysis of his contribution to the creation of the first scientific institutions of the Academy and the provision of their practical activities.
