STEFAN BANACH AND MATHEMATICS IN LVIV IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE XX CENTURY
To the 125th anniversary of Stefan Banach

In 2017, the scientific community celebrates the 125th anniversary of the world famous mathematician, one of the founders of modern functional analysis Stefan Banach. The group of mathematicians who worked in Lviv in the ‘20s-‘30s of the XX century is remembered in history as the Lviv mathematical school, and its undisputed leaders were Stefan Banach and Hugo Steinhaus. On September 18-23, 2017, the International Conference on Functional Analysis, dedicated to the anniversary of Stefan Banach, was held in Lviv. About 200 mathematicians from 16 countries took part in it. In this article, along with a story about the scientific achievements and personal life of Stefan Banach, fragments of the history of the development of mathematical research in Lviv are presented.
