SCIENCE OF XXI CENTURY: NEW DIMENSIONS, PROBLEMS, RESPONSIBILITY OF SCIENTISTS
Round table “Science as a vocation and profession”

On December 9, 2016, the Center for Humanitarian Education of NAS of Ukraine held a round table “Science as a vocation and a profession.” The topic is taken from the name of the famous Max Weber lecture, which he gave in winter of 1918 at the University of Munich. Now, at the beginning of XXI century, as culturally and socially painful are question of the transformation of the spiritual life into a kind of technical production, problem of division of labor in spiritual activities, radical change in the status of intellectual, and, in general, rationality in society, ultimately, the fate of the European community and the fate of civilization in general. Just as acute is the problem of the social status of a scientist. And it is logical that in this context an important role is played by Max Weber raising of questions about the meaning of scientific activity, meaning of science, and hence the nature of scientific understanding, the relationship between belief and knowledge, the practical meaning of spiritual values, reason and faith.
